What is Kadvi Hawa?
Kadvi Hawa (transl. Bitter wind) is based on true stories from the regions of India that are most vulnerable to climate change. The film explores the themes of farmer suicides, debt traps, water scarcity, and sea level rise through the perspectives of two characters: an old blind farmer named Hedu (Sanjay Mishra) and a young bank loan recovery agent named Gunu Babu (Ranvir Shorey).
Plot summary
Hedu lives in a village in Bundelkhand, where droughts have become frequent and severe. His son Mukund (Bhupesh Singh) is a farmer who has taken loans from the bank to buy seeds and fertilizers, but is unable to repay them due to crop failures. Gunu Babu is a ruthless loan collector who travels from village to village, threatening and harassing the defaulting farmers. He hails from a coastal village in Odisha, where his family is facing the risk of losing their home to rising sea levels.
When Gunu Babu arrives in Hedu's village, he meets the old man who pretends to be his friend and offers him shelter. However, Hedu has a hidden motive: he wants to save his son from Gunu Babu's wrath by convincing him that there are no farmers left in the village. He tells him stories of how many farmers have committed suicide or migrated to the cities due to the harsh conditions. He also tries to appeal to his conscience by reminding him of his own plight in Odisha.
As the film progresses, we see how both Hedu and Gunu Babu are victims of climate change, but also have a role in perpetuating it. Hedu represents the older generation that has witnessed the changes in nature over the years, but has not done much to prevent or adapt to them. Gunu Babu represents the younger generation that is driven by greed and consumerism, and does not care about the consequences of his actions on the environment or others.
The film ends with a tragic twist that reveals the fate of both characters and their families.
